One of the decisions to be made when considering the purchase of an engagement ring is how many carats should the ring be? The average according to The Knot (a research company and website for all things wedding) is 1 to 2 carats. There is no rule. Developing a budget is always a good place to start.
The term carat comes from the ancient method of measuring the weight of the stone against the seeds of the carob tree. In 1907 at the 4th General Conference on weights and measures, it was agreed that one carat would be equal to 200mg of a diamond. Carats can also be measured in points. 100 points equals a carat.
Every diamond is uniquely beautiful and can be put in a setting that enhances its beauty and makes a special engagement ring. You may have a small diamond and surround it with smaller diamonds to create something charming. Color and clarity are not as noticeable in smaller diamonds.
There is no set rule on how much you should spend for an engagement ring or how large the diamond should be on an engagement ring. It is personal preference, budget, lifestyle, and taste that determine what you want in an engagement ring. Our top engagement ring styles are:

One of the most important decisions you have to make when choosing your diamond ring is the size of the diamond. For most people, the higher the number of carats, the better! But this also comes with a price tag, as diamonds increase in price exponentially with the increase in carat weight. Interestingly, the statistics show that not everyone wants a large diamond, and the average size chosen is often very specific to the location of the consumer.
When shopping in store, you have the advantage of putting the ring on your finger. When shopping online, however, this can get somewhat tricky. The James Allen site has a helpful Diamond Size Calculator that shows you the size of the diamond on a finger.
There is no need to feel pressured into emulating the choices of others. There is also no dictate stating that a large diamond is better. Spend only what you feel comfortable spending on a diamond ring and focus on other important things that matter to the two of you, like buying a house, raising a family, travelling the world or whatever else it may be for you. At the end of the day, the engagement ring is simply a symbolic item, meant to signify a new chapter and the promise between two people. And whether this is signified by a .30 carat diamond or a 3.0 carat stone, or a different stone altogether, is completely up to you.
Please note: This calculator generates a projected budget based on our 30+ years of experience in the market. The total budget is not a definitive scientific amount, but rather a ball-park figure. The data (without using any personal information) may be used in our engagement ring research.
General Rule: You should spend at least 2 months salary on the engagement ring. If, for example, you are making $60,000 per year, you should spend $10,000 on the engagement ring. See below on how we debunk this theory.
If you are making $60,000 a year, for example, then your engagement ring budget is $5,000 according to the 1 month system, $10,000 according to the 2 month system, and $15,000 according to the 3 month system.
Are you and your partner thinking about getting engaged? The process of buying an engagement ring is not only fun, but also exciting and daunting. You and your partner may have plenty of questions to ask about finding the perfect ring as part of the engagement proposal you are putting together.
In the UK, the average weight of a diamond in an engagement ring sits at 0.6 carats, but the average diamond carat size and price fluctuates across different countries. This is because a lot of people place emphasis on the size of the diamond, making it become a measurement of love rather than a symbol of a new beginning and ultimate commitment. In some cases, people are embarrassed to give their beau a smaller diamond - especially in comparison to the rocks on their friends and families fingers.
Wanting to buy the largest diamond you can afford is understandable, but it is crucial that you don't sacrifice the quality of your engagement ring for an extra 0.2 of a carat. Here are a few tips to help you get the best diamond engagement ring for your money:
Only 70% of millennials stick with traditional diamonds, in contrast to 80% of couples in 1990.9,10 Older couples getting married for a second time are making a similar shift, seeking unique engagement rings that reflect their personalities.
But many believe the best way to buy an engagement ring is via online retailers, where the average cost of an engagement ring tends to be about 40% lower than at local jewelers. Many diamond websites allow users to search available stones based on their desired mix of the four Cs, and have setting-design features to help shoppers achieve the unique customized rings they seek. However, beware of bogus websites; reputable sites will be able to provide diamond certification which can be cross-checked with tools like Report Check from GIA. Reputable online jewelers will also insure your shipment and offer a customer-friendly return policy.
Experts agree the best way to pay for an engagement ring is with cash. Cash may provide more negotiating power with a jeweler and helps you avoid a possible debt hangover from financing. But a 0% APR credit card with an introductory promotional period that aligns with your ability to pay off the balance is another payment option. This scenario offers flexibility, gives you extra time to pay, and the ability to pay extra whenever you can. It may also allow you to earn rewards or a sign-up bonus, depending on the card terms, since sign-up bonuses typically require a short-term spending threshold.

Hi Shane! It's going to be difficult to actually size an eternity band at all. A drop down 3 sizes will be tough and the likely fixes may render the ring uncomfortable to wear. You could have the ring rebuilt, or you could try a combination of more metal and possibly a rubber ring guard (easy to find on Amazon). Good luck!
Hi Ashley! Most engagement rings are made to order because every body has a slightly different ring size, metal choice, and all central stones are ultimately unique. So you can order a ring in your size, or you can possibly size a ring after receiving it - just depends on the ring style, whether or not there are lots of diamond accents and how big of a size jump you need to make. Hope this helps!
Hi Little Bird. I'm about to buy an engagement ring, my girlfriends ring she regularly wears on her middle finger is 16.00mm in diameter. What size in US should I get her for her engagement finger? Any help would be much appreciated.Kind regards
Hi Danny! Congrats on your ring hunt! I hope it's going well. As far as the ring size goes, her middle finger ring is about a size 5.5. Usually your ring finger is quite a bit smaller. This ranges for everyone but .75-1.5 sizes is usually the leap from middle to ring finger. This means that she is likely a 4-4.75 on her ring finger. It also depends on which hand of hers is dominant, right or left. If she's right handed, her ring finger will be .25-.50 sizes larger than her left hand (most people wear an engagement ring on the left). So there's some figuring to do. I hope this helps! Feel free to reach out for further detail and support at contact@littlebirdtoldyou.comall the best!Danielle
Hi Danny, Yep, 1mm is way too small for an engagement ring. Without seeing the whole ring design your envisioning, it's tough for me to give the most specific advice. However, 1.5mm is really the thinnest we would recommend from a structural standpoint. Again, feel free to email images to contact@littlebirdtoldyou.com if that would be helpful!D
Hi Shane! I was wondering if you could help me out with the width translation, just a little confusing. My partner wears a size 6.5 and width of the ring is 8mm. According to the formula I should get a size 8 but I know that would be huge! Help please!
Hi Aishah - Happy to help! This depends a bit on the shape of your partners fingers. A 7.5 might work as well, but you'll definitely want to size up a bit from a 6.5. Is the ring you are interested in getting resizable?
This is an excellent post about engagement ring sizing. It is really informative. I am based in Europe so am really appreciative of the European size conversion chart you have linked to! I think your tip about reading the fine print on sizing and getting it in writing from your jeweler is great. I am a jeweler myself and I always want my customers to come away knowing that if there is any issue with sizing it can be resolved once it is all clear from the beginning. Jeff 041b061a72
