Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is a fantasy real-time strategy computer game developed by Blizzard Entertainment and released for DOS in 1995 and Mac OS in 1996 by Blizzard's parent, Davidson & Associates. A sequel to Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, the game was met with positive reviews and won most of the major PC gaming awards in 1996. In 1996, Blizzard released an expansion pack, Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, for DOS and Mac OS, and a compilation, Warcraft II: The Dark Saga, for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. The edition, released in 1999, included Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, provided Blizzard's online gaming service, and replaced the MS-DOS version with a Windows one.

GameSpot thought the AI was predictable but very efficient and the multiplayer facilities, while four years old, made it more enjoyable than at least half the new RTS games released in 1999. The service was already reliable after being refined through experience on Diablo and StarCraft, and the fact that it was free would be attractive both to new users and those of earlier editions. While the production values were those of 1995, the cartoonish graphics and excellent sound effects and musical score were still enjoyable in 1999.[29]

Apple fans are used to free gaming for the iPhone and iPad, but tend not to think so much about free games for macOS. This is a shame, because the Mac is a great games platform with plenty of excellent freebies.

The original Counter-Strike was released way back in 2000, and is still available as a paid-for game. The team-based Global Offensive followed in 2012, and was also paid-for, although it switched to free-to-play at the end of 2018, partly as a response to the success of titles such as Fortnite.

Global Offensive has the same anti-terrorist theme as other games in the Counter-Strike series, but focuses on online multiplayer action with two teams competing to achieve their objective, such as defusing a bomb or rescuing a group of hostages. There are several different game modes available, including Casual and Deathmatch, which are the easiest for new players who are just getting started.

Preposterously addictive and blessed with some of the catchiest music in gaming, RotMG is a twin-stick shooter and massively multiplayer (co-operative) RPG that caused massive drops in productivity in the Macworld offices one Christmas. You can play in the browser or download it on Steam; either way the game is free. David Price

This online roleplaying game puts several players together and keeps them building up their characters. World of Warcraft is one of the greatest computer experiences ever made, and has legions of fans.

Modern Warfare II connects with the new Call of Duty: WarzoneTM 2.0 experience, and with it, the evolution in Battle Royale with a brand-new play space and sandbox mode. Expect a massive calendar of free content post-launch featuring evolving gameplay with new maps, modes, seasonal events, community celebrations and more.

It's quite fashionable to repurpose old RTS games at the moment. Last year Age of Empires received similar treatment (opens in new tab). Age of Empires 4 is in development at Relic (opens in new tab) Entertainment; I wonder if Blizzard is contemplating a new full-fat Warcraft game.

World of Warcraft (WoW) is one of the most popular online games in the world, and now anyone can play for free without time restrictions. Your account will be limited, but you'll be able to explore the game for as long as you want. If you are an experienced player, you can use your stacks of Gold to purchase game time directly from Blizzard, allowing you to continue playing WoW without spending any real money.

Play the classic Warcraft 2: Tides Of Darknessreal-time strategy game online. The goal is to destroy your opponent before he destroy you. There are two sides, human inhabitants of Lordaeron and the other side is the invading orcs. Collect resources to create an army compose of different type of soldiers from melee, ranged, naval and aerial units, and spellcasters. Each type of their strength and weakness.

The same way, use a CD Key and download Frozen Throne from the same Blizzard site is what I did, it comes as an installer and works great. Still a fair amount of users play battlenet games too, which is fun.

When we last spoke with Blizzard Entertainment about one of its biggest classics, the original Diablo, the chat came with a surprise announcement: the original PC game was now for sale online for the first time, and not on The game's launch on GOG prompted many technical and logistical questions, and after answering those, Blizzard confirmed an intriguing "one more thing" about the first two WarCraft RTS games also coming to GOG. At the time, these had no release date.

GOG and Blizzard have officially opened a veritable Dark Portal to the first-ever digital-download version of its first two PC RTS games, WarCraft: Orcs & Humans and WarCraft II: Edition (which includes that sequel's awesome expansion pack). Right now, you can buy both as a combo pack for $15, or buy them separately for $6 and $10, respectively. And we've played them!

The problem with this is the same as in Diablo: in many of the "integer scaling" modes, WC2 lets your mouse cursor float away if pushed against the right or bottom edges. This happens when you move the map around with your mouse, which is way more common in an RTS than in a Diablo game. I prefer moving an RTS map via the mouse instead of arrow keys, so this issue bums me out. The solution has been to pick the generic "fullscreen" option, which fixes the mouse-boundary issue but adds much blurrier pixels (and messes up my Windows desktop once the game quits out).

But once again, GOG has loosed a "" game of old that requires a stomach-turning combination: you have to open specific ports on both your PC and your router, and you have to subject your machine to some pretty ancient netcode. As Ars' Peter Bright said last time around: "Running this game and opening up your network to it is going to make it extraordinarily easy to hack your computer. We have built numerous safeguards over the last 15 years to try to reduce the risks of exploitable network code, and this game removes all of them." (Click here to read the full screed.)

But I have a hard time recommending WarCraft: Orcs & Humans as anything other than a historic relic. This game saw Blizzard boldly dipping its toes into the nascent real-time strategy universe, which meant dealing with early '90s expectations that anything outside of slow, rigid, turn-based tactics was "too fast." The result is a painfully ponderous experience in desperate need of quality-of-life fixes across the board. 350c69d7ab
